Wise Guy

As Henry said, the Air France heist "made him." Can you talk about the details of how Henry and Tommy pull this off (getting the key, figuring out when to rob the store room, etc.) and how Pileggi makes all that compelling. Karen speaks dismissively about how Jimmy would cheer for the bad guys in crime movies (and he names his two kids after Frank and Jesse James, notorious outlaws of the Wild West). She clearly thinks that Jimmy is messed up. Are we "messed up" too if we root for Henry? Why or why not? What about after Henry is caught and sent to jail. How did you react knowing that they had a different version of jail for the wise guys?

  1. Henry first approached a cargo foreman, called Frenchy, about getting them the details of cargos eg. contents. And Henry figured out Air France would deliver a huge amount of cash. Because Henry, Tommy and their colleagues don't know exactly when the cash would arrive so that they need a spare key to prepare for the heist. Tommy and Henry found a guard keep the key with him all the time. So they set him up, borrowed the key, and made a copy of the key. They first tested the guard whether he was easy and he was. They sent a hooker to the guard and make time for them to create the copy. One evidence here, why Henry was smart was that he made a test trial before he completed a big crime.

  2. I felt like- Henry was smart. He did a trial to make sure that everything would go correctly because if it didn't go correctly then everything would have been messed up. The trial was the reason why he was able to get the key a get in there and get the money. If you didn't do the trial he would have gotten the money because they would have been all messed up. I give Henry credit for what he did. If It was another wiseguy I don't think they would have did a trial I think they would have just winning and do what they had to do to get the money. And I think they would have been Caught. Henry was smart and had a brain.Getting the key was a smart choice. It gave him the upper hand. I knew that was honey was caught he had a plans in that when I went to jail there's Always a upper hand for wise guys in jail I feel like. They always get away with everything money can buy them at anything. Yes he was sent to jail but Everything was going to be fine for him. What Wise guy doesn't have somebody in the inside. I was fine with him going to jail. Maybe it will wake him up. Not with that mess. He needed to take that degree and run with it. Oh Henry, chance to change his way of life.

    1. Good response, Shanaya. I agree, Henry is smart. In fact, if his life had been different, if his parents had encouraged him in school and he had had good teachers who recognized his talent and he had gone to college, he might have done nearly anything. Of course, he also seems to really have been smitten by "the life." So maybe if his family hadn't lived right across the street AND all those other things...

  4. I felt that Henry was a true definition of a wise guy, the way he picked up on this life style was impressive. You could tell this was what he was destined to be. I felt like Henry & Frenchys plan to hijack the money really worked out in their favor. First, their plan to distract the guard was impressive, they got to know the man and know what would distract him, second copying the key & not copying all of them, they were lucky that they got the right key copied. Lastly planning this all around a Jewish holiday causing the bank to have a delay in their pick up which also meant when that no one not even the police would be able to figure out when the money went missing, because Henry & frenchy had the spare it looked as if the money just vanished, there was no signs of them breaking in, nothing, they got away clean & rich. They were smart.

  5. Henry and Tommy pulled the Air France heist by coming up with an elaborate plan to make a copy to the key to the room where the money was. The guy who had the original key took his job of guarding the room seriously and he kept the key with him even when he was off work. Henry made the airport employee that he was in cahoots with befriend the guy and he also used a woman to help getting the guy away from the key for long enough for Henry to make a copy. Pileggi makes it compelling by describing how elaborate their plan had to be. By writing about how they had to be patient and carried out their plan over days, how they used what they knew about the guy like him being single and how they had to race against time to make a copy of the key and how luck played a role in the form of a Jewish holiday in the heist being successful. All that makes it compelling

  6. Henry and his pals came up with the plan to steal that money.Everything work in their favor getting the keys and duplicating them. The girl was used to entice or distract the guard; and with French reminding them that the Jewish holiday would work in their favor because the bank pick up would be until the Monday afternoon. They made a clean sweep.

  8. The guys got a high class hooker to hang out with the foreman to distract him and get the keys to make copies. the first time they got the keys the place was closed. so they had to plan it all over again and make sure they got there in time to make duplicates keys. I think eleven keys were made and for the rest there was not enough blanks. If we root for Henry and named our kids after him. It would only mean because we look up to Henry and had respect for him. Sending Henry to jail only meant he was like all his other wiseguys friends. He earned even more respect. Jail time was a breeze for Henry because he still got away with being free but behind bars. He was up to his same old tricks. By the time he served his time and was set free from jail nothing never change except no more bars.
