Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 251 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations before we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.
Eminem is the best selling artist of the last decade and it started with this album which he released in 2000. In this documentary, you will see this album was commercially very successful and critically acclaimed and at the same time was strongly criticized and protested for being homophobic and misogynistic. I think the criticisms and protests got to him and he started doing things to change the notion that he is homophobic. The first thing he did was performed with openly gay singer Elton John at the grammys. this album crossed a lot of lines morally but was also groundbreaking and innovative on an artistic level. The storytelling, rhyming, and humor in this album are great but it also understandable if you are disgusted and offended by this album
I thought more about Eminem's album after you brought it up in class. After a long thought and discussion with a friend of mine I thought, maybe Eminem purposefully put in these misogynistic and homophobic slurs in for the criticism. It may have been his plan to put something controversial to get views and popularity and then change that view people have after he rises to fame. Whether he did what he did for this purpose or not, the album was an absolute hit with musical genius behind every ryhmed syllable. Great choice Christopher, one of my favorite albums of his
